CARVING: This pendant is hand carved in the form of the Monkey King (Sun Wu Kong). He is depicted with his golden staff and armor facing into the great majestic mountains, symbolizing his strength. The Monkey King represents resistance, longing for freedom, and individualistic heroism. He is often viewed as a protector because of his protagonist role in the novel "Journey to the West" where he fights evil and protects his master from harm. The Monkey King represents wit, cleverness, rebellion, defiance, and spiritual transformation.
CARVING PROCESS: The hand carving is performed by a master carver and takes weeks of work. The master carver first designs the artwork by taking account the natural jade features. In this case, the master carver wanted to emphasize the green hues in the stone. If you look at the piece, the hand carving art is specifically formulated to emphasize the green tones.
